Azure VM naming conventions

Understand Azure VM resource names versus Windows and Linux hostnames, with short naming examples and generator links.

Open the Azure, AWS and GCP name generator

Azure VM resource names and operating-system hostnames are separate identifiers. Microsoft lists hostname restrictions separately from the resource name, which can be up to 64 characters. The portal commonly starts them with the same value.

Windows versus Linux

Our Windows hostname profile accepts 1–15 ASCII letters, digits and hyphens, rejects an all-numeric hostname and rejects a trailing hyphen. Our Linux profile accepts 1–64 ASCII letters, digits and hyphens and rejects a trailing hyphen. These are conservative subsets, not every provider-accepted character.

Keep Windows conventions short

vm-app-dev-001 is 14 characters and fits both local profiles. vm-payments-prod-eus-001 is too long for the Windows hostname profile. Use shorter workload/environment labels or a different approved pattern; do not silently truncate a name and risk collisions.

Choose a hostname deliberately

Generate the plan, review character counts and compare names across environments before provisioning. Passing local checks does not test DNS conflicts, domain policy, resource availability or deployment permissions.
